Narrative:
During engine start and disconnecting of external power; first officer obtained pushback clearance. I heard and understood: 'cleared to push '2-8-left.' I instructed the ramp 'brakes released; cleared to push; tail west.' just prior to the airplane crossing the service road; I sighted a B737 approaching from the left and simultaneously heard ATC instruct us to hold the push. I commanded a stop and the tug driver complied admirably. I commanded a pull of the airplane back toward the parking spot to ensure that the taxiway behind my aircraft was clear for B737 to pass. After B737 passed; ATC reclred us to pushback. The remainder of the flight went off as planned and without incident. Post event discussion with the first officer indicated that he did; in fact; hear an instruction to wait for B737 to pass before the cleared to push statement.

Narrative: DURING ENG START AND DISCONNECTING OF EXTERNAL PWR; FO OBTAINED PUSHBACK CLRNC. I HEARD AND UNDERSTOOD: 'CLRED TO PUSH '2-8-L.' I INSTRUCTED THE RAMP 'BRAKES RELEASED; CLRED TO PUSH; TAIL W.' JUST PRIOR TO THE AIRPLANE XING THE SVC ROAD; I SIGHTED A B737 APCHING FROM THE L AND SIMULTANEOUSLY HEARD ATC INSTRUCT US TO HOLD THE PUSH. I COMMANDED A STOP AND THE TUG DRIVER COMPLIED ADMIRABLY. I COMMANDED A PULL OF THE AIRPLANE BACK TOWARD THE PARKING SPOT TO ENSURE THAT THE TXWY BEHIND MY ACFT WAS CLR FOR B737 TO PASS. AFTER B737 PASSED; ATC RECLRED US TO PUSHBACK. THE REMAINDER OF THE FLT WENT OFF AS PLANNED AND WITHOUT INCIDENT. POST EVENT DISCUSSION WITH THE FO INDICATED THAT HE DID; IN FACT; HEAR AN INSTRUCTION TO WAIT FOR B737 TO PASS BEFORE THE CLRED TO PUSH STATEMENT.
