Narrative:

During departure flap retraction schedule; selecting flaps up; the leading edge slat disagreement; EICAS; message appeared. The leading edge light also illuminated. The flap position indicator showed both indicator needles paired between the flaps up position and flaps 1 position. The appropriate QRH checklists were accomplished. After burning fuel to be below the maximum landing weight; a partial flaps landing; per QRH; was completed without incident. Dispatch; as well as maintenance control; were informed and appropriately involved throughout the entire process. The in-flight cabin crew was briefed and updated regularly. Numerous PA announcements were made to inform and update the passenger. A fully coordination 'precautionary landing' was made; no 'brace' command was given. Due to the weight and speed of the partial flap approach/landing; brake temperature was addressed by contacting local maintenance for concurrence to continue to the gate. That received; we continued to the gate where technicians met the aircraft and provided additional brake cooling.
