Narrative:

After start of left engine; EICAS displayed 'left engine oil filter.' there were no other abnormal indications. Crew ran checklist on ground procedure; and shut down engine with oil temperature at 79 degrees C and EICAS still displayed. Crew contacted maintenance control and maintenance control directed aircraft back to gate for chip and filter inspections. Back at gate; maintenance found oil filters full of metal and chip detectors with metal attached. Engine was only at half life with 9600 hours since last overhaul; and aircraft had just flown in on the all-nighter from the islands. If this EICAS occurs in-flight; crews are directed to shut down and land at the nearest suitable airport. Our flight was about to go ETOPS! Normally; these engines go to overhaul between 20000-25000 hours.
