Narrative:
We were departing phoenix on the maxxo departure when ATC told us to turn to 360 degrees and go to forpe when able. It was then that I realized we were on the wrong departure. ATC gave no other instructions. As the captain I checked the route with the release but didn't check it against the pre departure clearance. The first officer missed the change on the pre departure clearance when he was getting the clearance. Departure didn't seem to have a problem but we did make a mistake and it was learning experience for both of us. Pre departure clearance on ACARS is still new and it needs to be checked by both crew members. When we brief the first officer says; 'route checks with pre departure clearance' and the captain should check it too.
