Narrative:
I was cleared for departure on runway 30. However; I initiated takeoff on runway 34. Realizing my error after several hundred yards roll; I aborted takeoff and announced same to tower which acknowledged same with subsequent takeoff on runway 30. Factors; though I make no excuse for the error; are: the 'almost' co-located beginnings of runways 30 and 34 along with my distraction towards thunderstorms along my route northbound. Normally I set the HSI needle in VOR mode (green) to runway heading; to not make the aforementioned error. Unfortunately; I had the needle in the GPS mode to a waypoint down-route approximating departure heading of the wrong runway. Not immediately realizing the error; I initiated the takeoff; then aborted. My self-corrective action is to now not depart the ramp with the HSI in other than green VOR/localizer mode along with heading bug also set to runway heading.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: C525 DEP FROM SUA BEGAN TKOF ROLL ON RWY 34 WHEN CLRED ON RWY 30; INITIATED LOW SPEED ABORT; LISTING RWY CONFIGN AS CAUSAL FACTOR.
Narrative: I WAS CLRED FOR DEP ON RWY 30. HOWEVER; I INITIATED TKOF ON RWY 34. REALIZING MY ERROR AFTER SEVERAL HUNDRED YARDS ROLL; I ABORTED TKOF AND ANNOUNCED SAME TO TWR WHICH ACKNOWLEDGED SAME WITH SUBSEQUENT TKOF ON RWY 30. FACTORS; THOUGH I MAKE NO EXCUSE FOR THE ERROR; ARE: THE 'ALMOST' CO-LOCATED BEGINNINGS OF RWYS 30 AND 34 ALONG WITH MY DISTR TOWARDS TSTMS ALONG MY RTE NBOUND. NORMALLY I SET THE HSI NEEDLE IN VOR MODE (GREEN) TO RWY HDG; TO NOT MAKE THE AFOREMENTIONED ERROR. UNFORTUNATELY; I HAD THE NEEDLE IN THE GPS MODE TO A WAYPOINT DOWN-RTE APPROXIMATING DEP HDG OF THE WRONG RWY. NOT IMMEDIATELY REALIZING THE ERROR; I INITIATED THE TKOF; THEN ABORTED. MY SELF-CORRECTIVE ACTION IS TO NOW NOT DEPART THE RAMP WITH THE HSI IN OTHER THAN GREEN VOR/LOC MODE ALONG WITH HDG BUG ALSO SET TO RWY HDG.
