Narrative:
Landed runway 14R; cleared runway onto runway 18 for taxi to taxiway C and gate. I had previously been flying into oma at night and controller had used this route for us many times during the month. When I turned onto runway 18; the controller said we were turning onto a runway; but didn't say anything else. We then asked if we could use runway 18 to taxiway C to the gate. He told us to contact ground control. There were no aircraft taking off or landing on any of the other runways at the time of the event. Safety was never compromised. Be sure to ask permission every time to use a runway for a taxiway; even though you have used it many times in the past.
