Narrative:

1 hour prior to flight; I checked flight information with duats; originally planning a sightseeing flight for a friend and his mother to kingman airport (9k8). I checked both WX and NOTAMS. Upon arriving at the airport; we decided to amend our destination to el dorado airport (eqa). I had checked the tfr's in the area; but had not specifically checked NOTAMS for eqa. Our flight to eqa was uneventful; until I tried to turn on the pilot controlled lighting. Plenty of light remained; so when the pilot controlled lighting for runway 15/33 did not activate; I was not concerned. The wind heavily favored runway 15. The approach and landing was normal; but during the rollout I saw a large pothole just left of the centerline; which I swerved to avoid. I commented to my passenger that I couldn't believe that was there on the runway. We taxied back to the departure end of runway 15; after allowing my passenger to change seats. As I taxied onto the runway; I noticed something that I had not seen from the air. There was an 'X' to mark a closed runway out of 2 inch by 4 inch pieces of lumber approximately 4 ft long. The wood was painted white and was invisible from the air. It was not until I tried to take off again that I realized that I had landed on a closed runway. This incident could've been avoided had I checked NOTAMS; where the runway was shown as being closed. This could've also been avoided had the airport been using the standard large yellow 'X' at the end of the runway. I taxied to the cross runway and completed the flight without further incident.

Title: SMA PLT LANDS ON CLOSED RWY AT DESTINATION ARPT FOR WHICH HE HAD NOT CHECKED NOTAMS.

Narrative: 1 HR PRIOR TO FLT; I CHKED FLT INFO WITH DUATS; ORIGINALLY PLANNING A SIGHTSEEING FLT FOR A FRIEND AND HIS MOTHER TO KINGMAN ARPT (9K8). I CHKED BOTH WX AND NOTAMS. UPON ARRIVING AT THE ARPT; WE DECIDED TO AMEND OUR DEST TO EL DORADO ARPT (EQA). I HAD CHKED THE TFR'S IN THE AREA; BUT HAD NOT SPECIFICALLY CHKED NOTAMS FOR EQA. OUR FLT TO EQA WAS UNEVENTFUL; UNTIL I TRIED TO TURN ON THE PCL. PLENTY OF LIGHT REMAINED; SO WHEN THE PCL FOR RWY 15/33 DID NOT ACTIVATE; I WAS NOT CONCERNED. THE WIND HEAVILY FAVORED RWY 15. THE APCH AND LNDG WAS NORMAL; BUT DURING THE ROLLOUT I SAW A LARGE POTHOLE JUST L OF THE CTRLINE; WHICH I SWERVED TO AVOID. I COMMENTED TO MY PAX THAT I COULDN'T BELIEVE THAT WAS THERE ON THE RWY. WE TAXIED BACK TO THE DEP END OF RWY 15; AFTER ALLOWING MY PAX TO CHANGE SEATS. AS I TAXIED ONTO THE RWY; I NOTICED SOMETHING THAT I HAD NOT SEEN FROM THE AIR. THERE WAS AN 'X' TO MARK A CLOSED RWY OUT OF 2 INCH BY 4 INCH PIECES OF LUMBER APPROX 4 FT LONG. THE WOOD WAS PAINTED WHITE AND WAS INVISIBLE FROM THE AIR. IT WAS NOT UNTIL I TRIED TO TAKE OFF AGAIN THAT I REALIZED THAT I HAD LANDED ON A CLOSED RWY. THIS INCIDENT COULD'VE BEEN AVOIDED HAD I CHKED NOTAMS; WHERE THE RWY WAS SHOWN AS BEING CLOSED. THIS COULD'VE ALSO BEEN AVOIDED HAD THE ARPT BEEN USING THE STANDARD LARGE YELLOW 'X' AT THE END OF THE RWY. I TAXIED TO THE CROSS RWY AND COMPLETED THE FLT WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT.
