After takeoff; during climb out/gear retraction; received nose gear door open. Recycled gear -- unsuccessful. Notified ATC; contacted company maintenance/dispatch. Attempted second recycle to no avail. After consulting maintenance/dispatch; decided to return for overweight landing. Declared emergency and made uneventful landing. All QRH and checklists performed. Good crew coordination in flight deck. Good coordination with cabin crew and passenger. Made sure everyone was updated. Good use of all resources (in-flight crew; ATC; maintenance; dispatch; etc).
