Narrative:
On takeoff roll first officer; acting as PF; stabilized power prior to selecting flex takeoff power. Flex temperature 44 degrees C; target EPR 1.35. After selecting flex power; engine #1 started to surge with every surge getting worse. Power fluctuated between 1.20 and 1.45 EPR. Decided to reject takeoff. Speed at that time was 50 KTS. Taxied off runway into taxiway east. Attempted several times to contact maintenance control via ACARS without any response; then called maintenance ZZZ1 and was told that needed to talk to ZZZ as we were out of the gate. Sent ACARS message to dispatch to let them know what was happening and the response was 'keep me posted.' called ramp and returned to gate. In addition to the instrument indications; there was noticeable yaw and feedback from the rudder pedals. According to what the mechanics were discussing after we were at the gate and searched in the mcdu; there was either an fmu or eec failure.
