Narrative:
Radar departure/arrival west and satellite south combined; numerous aircraft for satellite south; controller asked supervisor to split position several times. Other controllers advise supervisor to split; while assisting departure/arrival west controller. Supervisor finally attempted to split position; did confign; which then caused several problems with controller not being able to control data tags and handoffs. Satellite north did get split; but south satellite was unable to; due to controller workload. Arrival radar tried to split out; but was unable to get information from west; aircraft were coming over on frequencys not yet being worked; because supervisor had advised center of split. Supervisor then configured back; which caused satellite north not to have tags. After 45 mins; controller was able to split position out; and supervisor reconfigured. Some of this could have been avoided if supervisor knew how to configure and would have brought in controllers when asked to split position.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: MCI TRACON CTLR DESCRIBED HVY TFC EVENT WHEN SUPVR WAS LATE IN SPLITTING POSITIONS AND WAS UNFAMILIAR WITH COMPUTER PROCS.
Narrative: RADAR DEP/ARR W AND SATELLITE S COMBINED; NUMEROUS ACFT FOR SATELLITE S; CTLR ASKED SUPVR TO SPLIT POS SEVERAL TIMES. OTHER CTLRS ADVISE SUPVR TO SPLIT; WHILE ASSISTING DEP/ARR W CTLR. SUPVR FINALLY ATTEMPTED TO SPLIT POS; DID CONFIGN; WHICH THEN CAUSED SEVERAL PROBS WITH CTLR NOT BEING ABLE TO CTL DATA TAGS AND HDOFS. SATELLITE N DID GET SPLIT; BUT S SATELLITE WAS UNABLE TO; DUE TO CTLR WORKLOAD. ARR RADAR TRIED TO SPLIT OUT; BUT WAS UNABLE TO GET INFO FROM W; ACFT WERE COMING OVER ON FREQS NOT YET BEING WORKED; BECAUSE SUPVR HAD ADVISED CTR OF SPLIT. SUPVR THEN CONFIGURED BACK; WHICH CAUSED SATELLITE N NOT TO HAVE TAGS. AFTER 45 MINS; CTLR WAS ABLE TO SPLIT POS OUT; AND SUPVR RECONFIGURED. SOME OF THIS COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED IF SUPVR KNEW HOW TO CONFIGURE AND WOULD HAVE BROUGHT IN CTLRS WHEN ASKED TO SPLIT POS.
