Narrative:

At about 5000 ft the purser called to say there was a strong burning smell throughout the cabin; all ovens had been turned off as a precaution. We both smelled it as well. I verified with all 3 flight attendant position the smell and ovens off. No visible smoke; smelled strongly like engine oil to us; purser described as 'electrical smell.' I advised approach that we were returning as an emergency flight; would land overweight and wanted equipment standing by. I advised purser to complete cabin advisory and call when done. We obtained clearance and landed uneventfully.
