Narrative:
We were given instructions to taxi via taxiway Z to Y12 for runway 30 at iad. While traveling down taxiway Z; we noticed an aircraft to our left that appeared to be departing in front of us. It was actually a maintenance aircraft and not in line for takeoff. To get behind this aircraft; the captain taxied into a large holding area instead of continuing down taxiway Z. This part of the taxiway is very confusing because there are no marks on the commercial chart page showing the track of taxiway Z through this area. Dfw has a similar area near runway 17R; but the commercial chart actually shows taxi lines unlike the chart for iad. This situation could be greatly improved by providing more detail on either the taxiway or the commercial chart page. This entire area is a huge piece of concrete and the markings are not very clear especially at night.

Title: ACR FLT CREW BECOMES CONFUSED DURING TAXI TO RWY 30 VIA TXWY Z AND TXWY Y11 WHILE PASSING THROUGH HOLDING BLOCK.
Narrative: WE WERE GIVEN INSTRUCTIONS TO TAXI VIA TXWY Z TO Y12 FOR RWY 30 AT IAD. WHILE TRAVELING DOWN TXWY Z; WE NOTICED AN ACFT TO OUR L THAT APPEARED TO BE DEPARTING IN FRONT OF US. IT WAS ACTUALLY A MAINT ACFT AND NOT IN LINE FOR TKOF. TO GET BEHIND THIS ACFT; THE CAPT TAXIED INTO A LARGE HOLDING AREA INSTEAD OF CONTINUING DOWN TXWY Z. THIS PART OF THE TXWY IS VERY CONFUSING BECAUSE THERE ARE NO MARKS ON THE COMMERCIAL CHART PAGE SHOWING THE TRACK OF TXWY Z THROUGH THIS AREA. DFW HAS A SIMILAR AREA NEAR RWY 17R; BUT THE COMMERCIAL CHART ACTUALLY SHOWS TAXI LINES UNLIKE THE CHART FOR IAD. THIS SITUATION COULD BE GREATLY IMPROVED BY PROVIDING MORE DETAIL ON EITHER THE TXWY OR THE COMMERCIAL CHART PAGE.
