Narrative:
After engine start; ramp tower told us to taxi to spot 11 and contact ground. As we approached spot 11 we contacted the ground controller. The instruction as we heard was; 'taxi 27L via hotel. Hold short 27R.' as we approached runway 17/35 to cross; we cleared left and right; and I began to slow the aircraft. Just as we approached the hold short of runway 17/35 we saw an aircraft that appeared to be on low approach runway 35 from our right side. We stopped the aircraft aggressively just as the ground controller was telling us to hold our position. Our aircraft never entered the runway; but I believe it did cross the hold short bars. Ground asked us what happened and why didn't we turn onto taxiway east. We told him that we thought he had told us to taxi via taxiway H. We were then told to back taxi runway 17 and turn on taxiway south. The tower controller gave us a number to call when we landed. In our conversation with the tower supervisor; he told us that he had listened to the tapes and that the ground controller was speaking very fast and that our readback of our taxi clearance was not correct and the ground controller should have corrected us. We understand the importance of pilots reading back the clearance exactly as it was given to avoid this situation. The ground controller spoke very quickly; but we should have made absolutely sure what our clearance was before we began to taxi. Also; we did not read back the clearance as we heard it. We only read back 'hold short runway 27R.' if we had included; 'taxi via hotel; hold short 27R;' I'm certain we would have been corrected by ground. We have to make proper readbacks every time.

Title: B737 FLT CREW DEPARTING PHL IS CLEARED TO TAXI VIA H AND E HOLD SHORT RWY 27R. FLT CREW DOES NOT HEAR E AND CTLR DOES NOT CORRECT READ BACK. RWY INCURSION OCCURS AT RWY 35 AND TXWY H.
Narrative: AFTER ENG START; RAMP TWR TOLD US TO TAXI TO SPOT 11 AND CONTACT GND. AS WE APCHED SPOT 11 WE CONTACTED THE GND CTLR. THE INSTRUCTION AS WE HEARD WAS; 'TAXI 27L VIA HOTEL. HOLD SHORT 27R.' AS WE APCHED RWY 17/35 TO CROSS; WE CLRED L AND R; AND I BEGAN TO SLOW THE ACFT. JUST AS WE APCHED THE HOLD SHORT OF RWY 17/35 WE SAW AN ACFT THAT APPEARED TO BE ON LOW APCH RWY 35 FROM OUR R SIDE. WE STOPPED THE ACFT AGGRESSIVELY JUST AS THE GND CTLR WAS TELLING US TO HOLD OUR POS. OUR ACFT NEVER ENTERED THE RWY; BUT I BELIEVE IT DID CROSS THE HOLD SHORT BARS. GND ASKED US WHAT HAPPENED AND WHY DIDN'T WE TURN ONTO TXWY E. WE TOLD HIM THAT WE THOUGHT HE HAD TOLD US TO TAXI VIA TXWY H. WE WERE THEN TOLD TO BACK TAXI RWY 17 AND TURN ON TXWY S. THE TWR CTLR GAVE US A NUMBER TO CALL WHEN WE LANDED. IN OUR CONVERSATION WITH THE TWR SUPVR; HE TOLD US THAT HE HAD LISTENED TO THE TAPES AND THAT THE GND CTLR WAS SPEAKING VERY FAST AND THAT OUR READBACK OF OUR TAXI CLRNC WAS NOT CORRECT AND THE GND CTLR SHOULD HAVE CORRECTED US. WE UNDERSTAND THE IMPORTANCE OF PLTS READING BACK THE CLRNC EXACTLY AS IT WAS GIVEN TO AVOID THIS SITUATION. THE GND CTLR SPOKE VERY QUICKLY; BUT WE SHOULD HAVE MADE ABSOLUTELY SURE WHAT OUR CLRNC WAS BEFORE WE BEGAN TO TAXI. ALSO; WE DID NOT READ BACK THE CLRNC AS WE HEARD IT. WE ONLY READ BACK 'HOLD SHORT RWY 27R.' IF WE HAD INCLUDED; 'TAXI VIA HOTEL; HOLD SHORT 27R;' I'M CERTAIN WE WOULD HAVE BEEN CORRECTED BY GND. WE HAVE TO MAKE PROPER READBACKS EVERY TIME.
