Narrative:
We asked ATC for a clearance to deviate around WX. We were told we could deviate; go to ZZZ when able. First officer is PF. I called the flight attendants to tell them to take a seat and while I was talking to them; the first officer starts a turn towards WX. I come back up to try and find out what's going on. ATC had given him a heading which would take us through the WX. I called ATC to tell them we were unable to fly that heading due to WX. ATC says we need to do a 180 degree turn back out. We were between 2 lines of WX so we could not safely make the turn; which I told ATC. ATC said they would 'treat us as an emergency aircraft; squawk 7700;' so I did. We were told by ATC we had gone into restr airspace. Once clear of the WX; we were cleared back on course. I feel we handled this as best we could considering our first clearance to deviate around the WX. We had no idea restr airspace was ahead.
