At approximately 2000 ft MSL in assigned left turn the left engine failed. Declared an emergency; flew a left visual pattern back to runway while completing checklists. Made a smooth overweight landing (approximately 156000 pounds) with less than 100 FPM descent. Crash fire rescue equipment inspected aircraft and then taxied back to terminal/gate. Coordination with the flight attendants and passenger went smoothly/well.
