Narrative:
While on an IFR flight between ZZZ and rvs; I was cleared by ZKC to descend from 9000 ft to 6000 ft pilot's discretion. At 7000 ft; I was handed off to approach. I established contact and was cleared to 5000 ft. My heading was 090 degrees. A couple of mins later I was given a heading of 270 degrees. I read back and turned. As I approached 270 degrees I was given a heading of 090 degrees (I thought it was for spacing). I was then handed off to rvs tower; 23 NM west of rvs at 5000 ft. I read back the clearance and switched to tower. I expressed concern that I was 23 NM west at 5000 ft and handed off to tower. A couple of mins later; tower cleared me to descend and told me there were 2 of the same call sign on frequency -- my aircraft and a cessna. At this time I was 9 NM west of rvs at 2000 ft and was told to return to approach or cancel IFR. I canceled IFR and landed without incident. Tul approach should have recognized 2 aircraft with the same tail number when I followed his clearance.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A SMA PILOT REPORTS TWO ACFT IN THE RVS AREA WITH THE SAME LAST TWO LETTERS AND NUMBER CALL SIGNS BEING CTLED BY ATC AND THE REPORTER RESPONDS TO BOTH ATC CLRNCS.
Narrative: WHILE ON AN IFR FLT BTWN ZZZ AND RVS; I WAS CLRED BY ZKC TO DSND FROM 9000 FT TO 6000 FT PLT'S DISCRETION. AT 7000 FT; I WAS HANDED OFF TO APCH. I ESTABLISHED CONTACT AND WAS CLRED TO 5000 FT. MY HDG WAS 090 DEGS. A COUPLE OF MINS LATER I WAS GIVEN A HDG OF 270 DEGS. I READ BACK AND TURNED. AS I APCHED 270 DEGS I WAS GIVEN A HDG OF 090 DEGS (I THOUGHT IT WAS FOR SPACING). I WAS THEN HANDED OFF TO RVS TWR; 23 NM W OF RVS AT 5000 FT. I READ BACK THE CLRNC AND SWITCHED TO TWR. I EXPRESSED CONCERN THAT I WAS 23 NM W AT 5000 FT AND HANDED OFF TO TWR. A COUPLE OF MINS LATER; TWR CLRED ME TO DSND AND TOLD ME THERE WERE 2 OF THE SAME CALL SIGN ON FREQ -- MY ACFT AND A CESSNA. AT THIS TIME I WAS 9 NM W OF RVS AT 2000 FT AND WAS TOLD TO RETURN TO APCH OR CANCEL IFR. I CANCELED IFR AND LANDED WITHOUT INCIDENT. TUL APCH SHOULD HAVE RECOGNIZED 2 ACFT WITH THE SAME TAIL NUMBER WHEN I FOLLOWED HIS CLRNC.
