Narrative:
NOTAMS stated runway 15R/33L closed earlier. Station's information showed all runways closed except runway 17/35. Center cleared us for a visual and asked to call the airport in sight and terminated radar service. We set up to land on runway 17. ASOS reported runway 15R closed. Tried to key the lights for runway 17; to no avail. Made traffic advisory request; but when runway lights did not line up with our FMS; we decided to climb back up. Contacted center and asked for a vector back around to the airport and confirmation that runway 15R was open. Center confirmed that runway 15R was open and we landed safely on runway 15R. Incorrect information in the NOTAMS. Station information should be up-to-date. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated that after the flight the crew was confused about how the system became so mixed that they were uncertain what to believe. In the end; ATC had the correct information but the air carrier dispatched the crew with outdated NOTAMS. Had the crew not questioned that ASOS and the NOTAMS and why the expected lights were off they would have landed on a closed runway.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: THE NOTAMS AND ASOS AT SPS RPTED RWY 15R/33L CLOSED WHILE STATION INFO SAID ONLY RWY 27/35 WAS OPEN. IN FACT ONLY RWY 15R/33L WAS OPENED.
Narrative: NOTAMS STATED RWY 15R/33L CLOSED EARLIER. STATION'S INFORMATION SHOWED ALL RWYS CLOSED EXCEPT RWY 17/35. CENTER CLEARED US FOR A VISUAL AND ASKED TO CALL THE ARPT IN SIGHT AND TERMINATED RADAR SERVICE. WE SET UP TO LAND ON RWY 17. ASOS RPTED RWY 15R CLOSED. TRIED TO KEY THE LIGHTS FOR RWY 17; TO NO AVAIL. MADE TFC ADVISORY REQUEST; BUT WHEN RWY LIGHTS DID NOT LINE UP WITH OUR FMS; WE DECIDED TO CLB BACK UP. CONTACTED CENTER AND ASKED FOR A VECTOR BACK AROUND TO THE ARPT AND CONFIRMATION THAT RWY 15R WAS OPEN. CENTER CONFIRMED THAT RWY 15R WAS OPEN AND WE LANDED SAFELY ON RWY 15R. INCORRECT INFORMATION IN THE NOTAMS. STATION INFORMATION SHOULD BE UP-TO-DATE. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THAT AFTER THE FLT THE CREW WAS CONFUSED ABOUT HOW THE SYSTEM BECAME SO MIXED THAT THEY WERE UNCERTAIN WHAT TO BELIEVE. IN THE END; ATC HAD THE CORRECT INFO BUT THE ACR DISPATCHED THE CREW WITH OUTDATED NOTAMS. HAD THE CREW NOT QUESTIONED THAT ASOS AND THE NOTAMS AND WHY THE EXPECTED LIGHTS WERE OFF THEY WOULD HAVE LANDED ON A CLOSED RWY.
