Narrative:
We departed ZZZ and upon gear retraction we got a 'steering inoperative' caution message. It was during a busy time of flight and both the first officer and myself became distraction with the message. I was the PF and did not engage the proper navigation mode to command the flight director to follow the RNAV departure we were supposed to be on. We departed on the abc two RNAV departure. I engaged heading mode and flew runway heading while dealing with the caution message. At about 1000 ft AGL the approach controller asked what departure we were on and we then realized our mistake. He gave us a right turn and we resumed the RNAV departure with no known loss of separation between us and any other aircraft. We waited until reaching 10000 ft to continue dealing with the caution message. The flight continued uneventfully and upon landing we did not have any nosewheel steering and were met by fire/rescue upon clearing the runway. Once cleared by them we got towed to our gate.
