Narrative:
During ground operations in dca; we briefed the departure out off runway 1; which is a left turn to join the 328 degree radial from dca VOR; we even made a 10 mi circle for noise abatement. After we took the runway the tower controller told us to keep the aircraft ahead of us in sight for visual separation. After lift-off we proceed to start a left turn to join the radial. Once the turn was executed I was outside keeping an eye on the traffic; when I looked inside again I noticed that we were not on the radial and told the first officer to join the 328 degree radial. ATC asked us if we were established on the 328 degree radial and gave us a turn to 280 degrees. During that time I looked at the first officer HSI and it was set to the 358 degree radial. ATC told us to turn 330 degrees and to copy a phone number for a possible pilot deviation. Once we got to ZZZ I called ATC and they told me that we had violated P-56 naval observatory.
