Narrative:
Upon runway 21 rollout at smo; landing; I 'veered off' of the runway; and continued to area east of taxiway B2 and stopped. I called ground for taxi clearance to lower south taxi lane from taxiway B2. Ground gave me a number to call for possible pilot deviation. I talked to the ground controller on phone to straighten things out. I will roll out on runway in the future unless told by tower to veer off the runway; if a jet is approaching. Such was the normal procedure in the past; to veer off the runway during rollout. So I have been 'lulled' into the habit of doing this after every landing at smo only. The general traffic has decreased at the airport the past few months; so expediting to get off of the runway is not as necessary as it was in the past. So now; I will stay on the active runway until reaching a marked taxiway; then turn off the runway at a marked taxiway only -- as I would at any other airport; unless otherwise instructed by ATC.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PLT OF SMA IS CHASTISED BY GROUND CONTROLLER FOR EXITING RWY AT SMO OTHER THAN AT A MARKED TAXIWAY.
Narrative: UPON RWY 21 ROLLOUT AT SMO; LNDG; I 'VEERED OFF' OF THE RWY; AND CONTINUED TO AREA E OF TXWY B2 AND STOPPED. I CALLED GND FOR TAXI CLRNC TO LOWER S TAXI LANE FROM TXWY B2. GND GAVE ME A NUMBER TO CALL FOR POSSIBLE PLTDEV. I TALKED TO THE GND CTLR ON PHONE TO STRAIGHTEN THINGS OUT. I WILL ROLL OUT ON RWY IN THE FUTURE UNLESS TOLD BY TWR TO VEER OFF THE RWY; IF A JET IS APCHING. SUCH WAS THE NORMAL PROC IN THE PAST; TO VEER OFF THE RWY DURING ROLLOUT. SO I HAVE BEEN 'LULLED' INTO THE HABIT OF DOING THIS AFTER EVERY LNDG AT SMO ONLY. THE GENERAL TFC HAS DECREASED AT THE ARPT THE PAST FEW MONTHS; SO EXPEDITING TO GET OFF OF THE RWY IS NOT AS NECESSARY AS IT WAS IN THE PAST. SO NOW; I WILL STAY ON THE ACTIVE RWY UNTIL REACHING A MARKED TXWY; THEN TURN OFF THE RWY AT A MARKED TXWY ONLY -- AS I WOULD AT ANY OTHER ARPT; UNLESS OTHERWISE INSTRUCTED BY ATC.
