Narrative:
During takeoff; when gear selected up; indicator lights showed 3 red (unsafe) and gear appeared to remain down. Cycled handle once with same result. Selected gear down and with 3 green down; got vectors to return. Landed overweight at 146000 pounds with a smooth touchdown.

Title: AN MD83 FLIGHT CREW FOUND THEIR LANDING GEAR WOULD NOT RETRACT AND SHOWED THREE RED GEAR UNSAFE LIGHTS. THEY PUT THE GEAR HANDLE BACK DOWN; GOT THREE GREEN; AND RETURNED TO LAND AT THEIR DEPARTURE AIRPORT.
