Narrative:
At leveloff; #2 engine began compressor stalls until power was reduced to idle. We ran the MD90 engine surge/compressor checklist; and per the checklist and engine response; had to leave the engine at idle. We notified ATC; flight attendants; passengers; dispatcher; and ZZZ operations of the situation. Declared an emergency and returned via vectors for a visual approach to at ZZZ. All checklists were run; and approach was briefed and flown per engine-out procedure; then engine was shut down after landing. Fire marshal inspected the aircraft before returning to gate. I debriefed maintenance; pilot; dispatcher; and chief pilot on duty before continuing the rotation. Found out later that there was damage in the 6 stage compressor.
