Narrative:
On aircraft X; an aircraft support mechanic replaced a halon fire extinguisher. As a lead; I made the logbook entry for the extinguisher that was replaced. The extinguisher was not the correct extinguisher for this aircraft resulting in a configuration deviation. This could have been prevented by checking the extinguisher effectivity to the aircraft. Supplemental information from acn 817018: I was completing the safety check on aircraft X. I found a fire extinguisher with the date unreadable. We replaced the fire extinguisher with the same type that was on the aircraft. Fire extinguisher was not effective for that aircraft; resulting in a configuration deviation.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A Lead Mechanic signs off the replacement of a cabin halon fire extinguisher by a Repairman; because due date was unreadable. Replacement halon bottle was not effective for the B737-800; resulting in a configuration deviation release.
