Narrative:
We were departing from vny at night; VMC. We were cleared to depart runway 16R; NUAL6.dag departure. Shortly after gear retraction; the pilot flying reached for and pressed the 'pitch trim' switch. I asked what he had; and he said he lost electric trim. Shortly after that; the 'yaw damper' light illuminated. I tried to reset the trim switch which would not reset. 5 seconds or so later; the FGC-1 'fail cas' message illuminated. I reached up and selected FGC-2. There was no change; so I re-selected FGC-1 and was able to restore the 'pitch trim' and 'yaw damper.' by the time this was accomplished; we were leveling at 4;000 ft and initiating a turn from 160 degrees to 110 degrees. The SID requires crossing the vny 2.2 DME at or below 1;700 ft; which we may have violated. It became apparent after restoring FGC-1 that the pilot flying had lost his FD when FGC-1 initially failed. All systems functioned normally for the remainder of the flight.
