Narrative:
Arrived at aircraft after passengers and flight attendants boarded due to crew rest issues. Found that aircraft had been moved from gate X; we had parked the previous evening at gate Y. Cabin temperature was over 100 degrees F; outside air temperature 15 degrees F. Found the following incorrect switch positions and indications upon boarding: APU running with no fuel pump switches on. Both air conditioning packs selected on. Both temperature selectors in automatic; full (maximum) heat selected. Left pack trip master caution. All hydraulic pumps on; including 'a' system electric. I was unable to determine who set up the flight deck this way; other than being told by gate agent that it was a 'contract' company. We then reset all switches to proper positions; pack trip was dealt with; cabin temperature brought back under control; fire test on engines and APU completed; and then we completed all normal pre-departure duties. We are fortunate that this did not end badly.
