Cleared for NUAL6 departure pmd transition from vny runway 16R climb to 4;000 ft. Cleared from tower for runway 16R runway heading. At 1;700 ft crossing fix started climb to 4;000 ft; got 'pull up terrain' warning. Started left turn and climb to avoid any obstacles in path at an unfamiliar area.
