Narrative:
The smoke detector in the lavatory went off. Immediately; I grabbed the halon and opened the door. I grabbed the garbage can and went through the contents looking for the sources. I opened all compartments looking for the source. I could not find anything. I then felt the water heater and found it very hot. I turned it off and the smoke alarm shut off. We felt all the other water heaters in the other lavatories and they were all cool. I also smelled what seemed like the odor the packs emit coming from both the lavatory and the cockpit. Flight attendant #3 was on the phone informing the captain of the situation. We landed in ZZZZ without incident. Maintenance checked out the aircraft and informed us the problem was fixed. We took off on the return flight. A few hours into the flight; the smell and heat came back. We diverted to ZZZ and took another aircraft home.
