Narrative:
Coming in; heard our next airplane on frequency with problem. Met the inbound crew; was told that when they went to put slats out got a leading edge slats disagreement light. Maintenance went to east&east compartment; saw that there was no status message. Had the checklist to try and get the problem again recycle the slats to 1 degree a couple of times and no status message. Also; the inbound crew also said that when they went to 'alternate' switch the status went away. Agreed to take the airplane put the flaps to 5 degrees on taxi out no problem no messages. After takeoff with to put flaps and slats to 1 degree and had the status message 'leading edge slats disagreement' and 'leading edge light on.' captain went through checklist; first officer flying. Captain took the airplane. The first officer checked the checklist to make sure that it was correct. It was. The problem didn't go away. Limited to 230 KTS and FL200. Leveled off at 15;000 ft. Ran the approach and landing checklist; declared an emergency due to wet runway; reference +30 KTS and cheap insurance. Used maximum for braking. Landed uneventful. Taxied to the gate.
