Narrative:
Aircraft was approaching stafo on V476 while on an IFR flight from chattanooga to washington. While descending from 17000 to 10000', center requested a 360 degree turn to the right. As the first turn was completed, a second turn was requested by center. As we entered the second turn, center issued holding instructions to hold west at irons, maintain 10000', and issued an expected further clearance time. We read back the clearance. I did not recall center's acknowledgement, but they did not correct or challenge our readback. As we completed our second turn and rejoined V-476, I heard an airline flight call entering holding at irons, 10000'. I immediately asked center to clarify our holding instructions. After some hesitation, we were issued new holding instructions to hold at likely X, some 9 mi behind us. Before we arrived at likely, holding was cancelled, we were handed off to national approach and vectored to dca. Continuous attention to frequency traffic and situational awareness alerted us to a possible conflict.

Title: GOV SMT FLT CREW QUESTIONED CENTER ABOUT BEING ASSIGNED THE SAME ALT AS ANOTHER ACFT IN THE SAME HOLDING PATTERN.
Narrative: ACFT WAS APCHING STAFO ON V476 WHILE ON AN IFR FLT FROM CHATTANOOGA TO WASHINGTON. WHILE DSNDING FROM 17000 TO 10000', CENTER REQUESTED A 360 DEG TURN TO THE RIGHT. AS THE FIRST TURN WAS COMPLETED, A SECOND TURN WAS REQUESTED BY CENTER. AS WE ENTERED THE SECOND TURN, CENTER ISSUED HOLDING INSTRUCTIONS TO HOLD W AT IRONS, MAINTAIN 10000', AND ISSUED AN EXPECTED FURTHER CLRNC TIME. WE READ BACK THE CLRNC. I DID NOT RECALL CENTER'S ACKNOWLEDGEMENT, BUT THEY DID NOT CORRECT OR CHALLENGE OUR READBACK. AS WE COMPLETED OUR SECOND TURN AND REJOINED V-476, I HEARD AN AIRLINE FLT CALL ENTERING HOLDING AT IRONS, 10000'. I IMMEDIATELY ASKED CENTER TO CLARIFY OUR HOLDING INSTRUCTIONS. AFTER SOME HESITATION, WE WERE ISSUED NEW HOLDING INSTRUCTIONS TO HOLD AT LIKELY X, SOME 9 MI BEHIND US. BEFORE WE ARRIVED AT LIKELY, HOLDING WAS CANCELLED, WE WERE HANDED OFF TO NATIONAL APCH AND VECTORED TO DCA. CONTINUOUS ATTN TO FREQ TFC AND SITUATIONAL AWARENESS ALERTED US TO A POSSIBLE CONFLICT.
