Narrative:

First officer leg. Briefed arrival/approach/landing/runway exit strategy prior to descent. Discussed standard taxi route (strs) first officer planned a B9 exit from runway 08. Crew discussed how B9 leads into taxiway sierra and that would be the route (strs) to the gate. After landing and first officer's transfer of the jet to the captain; the captain exited runway 08 at B9. Tower cleared crew to 'taxi to parking via sierra contact south ground.' first officer read back clearance and captain confirmed it. Both acknowledged it was as discussed. Captain joined southbound taxiway from B9 first officer glanced at phx 10-9 and felt they were on correct taxiway way; went head down momentarily to dial south ground and then began after landing flow. After passing taxiway charlie first officer contacted south ground stating position as southbound on sierra for gate X. ATC responded 'actually you're on tango. Taxi tango delta to parking.' prevention ideas or crew actions. What is frustrating is that the event was briefed and understood prior to descent and upon review of chart it looks like it would be pretty straight forward to get from B9 to taxiway sierra and would take effort to turn and end up on tango. I do recall on a previous visit to phx earlier in the month that it was difficult to see the signage for sierra and tango and it seemed counter intuitive that the east taxiway was the southbound route and the west was the northbound. Like driving on the wrong side of the road. Also a quick glance at the airport diagram the first officer (clipped on side below first officer's window) from right to left (25R) could or did lead to error of thinking taxiway sierra came first then tango. Prevention: continue thorough briefing and increase vigilance and chart crosscheck. Just because a plan has been briefed and understood by crew doesn't mean that the execution will come easy. Captain also stated he had not been to phx in a long time which presents a threat.supplemental info from acn 825512: having spoken with other crews; apparently we are not the only ones who have either made this error or at least been confused by the lack of clear signage at this location on the phx airport.

Title: A B737 crew exited PHX Runway 8 and taxied onto Taxiway 'T' when the taxi clearance was Taxiway 'S'. The signage at 'S' and 'T' was not clear enough to direct the crew onto 'S.'
