Narrative:

I may have performed maintenance on gyros in an environment that may not have met the specifications called out in the engineering order. We were under the impression that the environment provided to us for this repair was sufficient. Engineering made the determination in mar 09 that the facility does not meet the engineering order. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter stated they repair and test all of their standby; directional and vertical gyros for all the different fleets his carrier operates. The repair shop facility he referred to in his report; was not the issue. Recently; an FAA inspector had visited the facility and noted one of the scopes used to test and verify gyros had been around so many years and used so much; that the part number had worn off. Although the scope was properly calibrated; verifying the scope part number became an issue and all the gyros tested and approved; using that particular scope; came into question.
