Narrative:
Received ATC clearance via cathedral 9 departure V370 tnp direct jotnu.... When I saw the V370 tnp on the clearance; we thought it was odd that they gave us a clearance for V370 and tnp. So after a review with the 54-year pilot with an instrument rating flying with me that flew out of psp for 16 years was helping me. We were confused. We thought that they should have given us only tnp. And that we were only cleared for V370 tnp. So we basically flew the V370 to tnp off psp and never flew the emrud portion of the departure. After we realized what we did; if we did not understand we should have asked or phoned the tower for clarification before takeoff.
