Narrative:
On final approach; 'gear down' was selected. The right main indicated amber 'doors' and red 'unsafe.' the approach was discontinued and vectors were initiated. The event continued for 60-90 seconds before the right main indicated green. On vectors: dispatch and maintenance were consulted and the abnormal situation led to the completion of alternate gear extension checklist. Flight attendants and passengers were advised. On final again: alternate gear extension checklist completed. Upon selecting gear inhibit switch on; the right main gear green light extinguished and the amber 'doors' and red 'unsafe' lights re-illuminated. At completion of checklist; the alternate extension lights indicated 3 green. Nose steering inoperative upon landing. Landing was uneventful. After landing: aircraft stopped after clearing runway; was shut down; and towed to the gate.
