Narrative:
First officer was flying when we were cleared for stadium visual approach runway 24R. Although they were giving VFR WX, I knew from the past that after the turn to final at this time of day, you might lose the runway after turn to final. I told the copilot this and the fact that he should slow and prepare for a high rate of descent. However, he was slow doing this and the controller told us to turn base which he did. However, we lost the runway for visual reference and overshot the 24R runway and overflew the 25 approach with an aircraft beneath us which I had visually at all times. This time it worked out and we landed normally. I feel the controller should not issue these clrncs on downwind at this time of day at this busy airport. The next time I will refuse these requests until I am on base leg and know the runway is seen from that point.

Narrative: F/O WAS FLYING WHEN WE WERE CLRED FOR STADIUM VISUAL APCH RWY 24R. ALTHOUGH THEY WERE GIVING VFR WX, I KNEW FROM THE PAST THAT AFTER THE TURN TO FINAL AT THIS TIME OF DAY, YOU MIGHT LOSE THE RWY AFTER TURN TO FINAL. I TOLD THE COPLT THIS AND THE FACT THAT HE SHOULD SLOW AND PREPARE FOR A HIGH RATE OF DSCNT. HOWEVER, HE WAS SLOW DOING THIS AND THE CTLR TOLD US TO TURN BASE WHICH HE DID. HOWEVER, WE LOST THE RWY FOR VISUAL REF AND OVERSHOT THE 24R RWY AND OVERFLEW THE 25 APCH WITH AN ACFT BENEATH US WHICH I HAD VISUALLY AT ALL TIMES. THIS TIME IT WORKED OUT AND WE LANDED NORMALLY. I FEEL THE CTLR SHOULD NOT ISSUE THESE CLRNCS ON DOWNWIND AT THIS TIME OF DAY AT THIS BUSY ARPT. THE NEXT TIME I WILL REFUSE THESE REQUESTS UNTIL I AM ON BASE LEG AND KNOW THE RWY IS SEEN FROM THAT POINT.
