Narrative:
Flying at FL360. SIGMET for severe weather was active in the area. Onboard weather radar was painting yellow targets on track and tops to approximately FL380 were visible at 12 O'clock. Via cpdlc to center deviations were requested in order L20; R20; L10. All were rejected. We were informed by center that right deviations might be available in about 10 minutes. Using captains emergency authority after our 3rd deviation request was rejected; we deviated 10L to avoid a thunderstorm. Exterior lites were turned on; FL360 was maintained and our position was broadcast. Center was informed of our actions via cpdlc. Total time of deviation was no more than 5 minutes. Center was informed when we returned to course via cpdlc and the flight then proceeded to destination without further incident.
