Narrative:

On climb out at approximately 2000 MSL; ECAM G engine hydraulic lo press was displayed; the first officer was flying; I did the ECAM I noticed the ptu was initially not on but after the ECAM was completed it was on. We informed departure of our problem and held at 11000 for 2 turns I called dispatch and informed them of our problem with the green hydraulic system; they coordinated our return to the airport. After discussing our options with the first officer we both thought that the safest action was to declare an emergency and return to land on the longest runway; the flight attendants were briefed of our return and I made a PA to the passengers. I flew the approach and normal landing and taxied to gate; ground was very slow to get us to the gate; 17 min which I thought was a long time for a hydraulic problem to taxi.
