Narrative:
Prior to flap retraction on takeoff got EICAS left gen light. Following cleanup; crew ran checklist; started APU; and disconnected left gen. ATC advised of return. While maneuvering at 10;000 ft a loud bang; aircraft shudder; and multiple electrical failures occurred; which did not reset (e.g. First officer lost all flt/nav screens; among other faults.) flight attendant notified cockpit of electrical discharge at left engine. Crew evaluation of lightning strike or complicating left gen issue unclear. Weather not conducive to lightning activity nor forecast. Crew then returned to land without further delay. Dispatch notified and assisted in calculating landing performance. Emergency declared. Cabin advisory but no preparation directed by captain. Overweight landing accomplished without incident. Subsequent inspection revealed evidence of lightening strike with multiple areas of damage to left engine cowling.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B767 Captain reports disconnecting left generator during climb after receiving generator EICAS message. While maneuvering for return at 10;000 FT an apparent lightning strike to left engine occured causing the aircraft to shake violently plus numerous other electrical system failures. Flight returned to the departure airport for an overweight landing.
Narrative: Prior to flap retraction on takeoff got EICAS L GEN light. Following cleanup; crew ran checklist; started APU; and disconnected L Gen. ATC advised of return. While maneuvering at 10;000 FT a loud bang; aircraft shudder; and multiple electrical failures occurred; which did not reset (e.g. First Officer lost all flt/nav screens; among other faults.) Flight Attendant notified cockpit of electrical discharge at L engine. Crew evaluation of lightning strike or complicating L Gen issue unclear.
