Narrative:

We were cleared to descend to 17;000 on the descent into ase. We observed an aircraft below us on the TCAS display and ATC also informed us that there was traffic level at 16500. I slowed the descent and the airspeed to give us more time to acquire the aircraft visually. When we leveled at 17;000 the TCAS showed the aircraft only 100' below our altitude. We informed ATC of this and told him that we would probably have to deviate. He acknowledged by saying that was approved. We received an RA; which told us to climb and I complied with the RA. We climbed 700-1000 ft above our altitude and then saw the traffic; which ended up being a glider; which was climbing in a thermal. We advised ATC of our RA compliance and he instructed us to return to our altitude when able.
