Narrative:
There are 3 events. These occurred during a sightseeing trip from whp to sba. While in contact with bur approach, I thought I was told to change frequencys (from 120.4 to 124.6). I switched back after a minute to discover I was being told to avoid traffic climbing in front of me. I circled ucla campus at 3000' MSL. This is about 3 mi from the controled airport, smo (175' MSL), so I was within smo air traffic area west/O approval. I followed the coastline from pacific palisades to sba at 3000', about 1/2 mi offshore. While doing this I entered the lax TCA offshore of malibu. I attribute these errors to: not practicing communications with control facs often enough (whp is uncontrolled, but under the bur arsa). Sloppy navigation (my flight plan had me avoiding the air traffic area and TCA). To prevent these mistakes from happening again I am going to: communication with bur approach more frequently, and study my flight plan more carefully before the flight.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: GA SMA UNAUTH PENETRATION OF AIRSPACE. SMO ATA LAX TCA.
Narrative: THERE ARE 3 EVENTS. THESE OCCURRED DURING A SIGHTSEEING TRIP FROM WHP TO SBA. WHILE IN CONTACT WITH BUR APCH, I THOUGHT I WAS TOLD TO CHANGE FREQS (FROM 120.4 TO 124.6). I SWITCHED BACK AFTER A MINUTE TO DISCOVER I WAS BEING TOLD TO AVOID TFC CLBING IN FRONT OF ME. I CIRCLED UCLA CAMPUS AT 3000' MSL. THIS IS ABOUT 3 MI FROM THE CTLED ARPT, SMO (175' MSL), SO I WAS WITHIN SMO ATA W/O APPROVAL. I FOLLOWED THE COASTLINE FROM PACIFIC PALISADES TO SBA AT 3000', ABOUT 1/2 MI OFFSHORE. WHILE DOING THIS I ENTERED THE LAX TCA OFFSHORE OF MALIBU. I ATTRIBUTE THESE ERRORS TO: NOT PRACTICING COMS WITH CTL FACS OFTEN ENOUGH (WHP IS UNCTLED, BUT UNDER THE BUR ARSA). SLOPPY NAV (MY FLT PLAN HAD ME AVOIDING THE ATA AND TCA). TO PREVENT THESE MISTAKES FROM HAPPENING AGAIN I AM GOING TO: COM WITH BUR APCH MORE FREQUENTLY, AND STUDY MY FLT PLAN MORE CAREFULLY BEFORE THE FLT.
