Narrative:

During taxi in; ramp assigned us a spot to hold waiting for our gate and the alley to open up. After waiting 5 minutes or so; a 777 asked ramp for us to move up so they could get by us on taxiway G. Ramp instructed us to move up and turn left towards their gate to let them by our tail. We complied and were next to and just shy of gate xa. The 777 then taxied up by us and tried to enter gate. The 777 then asked us to turn again so they could get to the gate; but we were unable to turn as 777 had now positioned their right wing at and nearly overhead our cockpit and aircraft. The 777 then taxied another several feet forward to gate xa and asked us to verify that their wing would not hit us. At this time; their wing was going to go over our cockpit and fuselage; and I refused to ensure their clearance. Ground personnel also refused to guide them in and ensure their clearance as they might hit us. Then the 777 asked us to do an impromptu powerback with no guideman in the ramp area. We refused. They then insisted MD80s can powerback anytime it was necessary. We refused to powerback. We requested a tug to push us back into the clear and ramp tower refused. He said he had none available and wouldn't comply and indicated we would just have to sit there. Finally; after 30 minutes or so; a ramp manager came onto the ramp to assess the problem. He ordered ground crew to get a tug and push us clear of the 777. Ground crew complied and no aircraft damage occurred.
