Narrative:
During cruise flight at FL310 the master caution light came on with the left oil pressure low annunciator light. Oil quantity for the left engine indicated near zero and oil pressure was below 35 psi. Captain declared an emergency; requested lower altitude and advised ATC of our desire to land. Accomplished appropriate checklists during descent; shutdown left engine and landed. After landing arff inspected left engine and then followed us to gate.

Title: MD80 flight crew experienced left engine oil loss at FL310. An emergency was declared; the engine shutdown followed by a diversion to the nearest suitable airport.
Narrative: During cruise flight at FL310 the master caution light came on with the L oil pressure low annunciator light. Oil quantity for the left engine indicated near zero and oil pressure was below 35 PSI. Captain declared an emergency; requested lower altitude and advised ATC of our desire to land. Accomplished appropriate checklists during descent; shutdown left engine and landed. After landing ARFF inspected left engine and then followed us to gate.
