Narrative:

Normal takeoff and departure. Throughout the climb and heading west there was a strong odor; in the cockpit; similar to plastic burning. Passengers and flight attendants confirmed a similar smell throughout the cabin; mainly in mid cabin. After discussing the event with the first officer; flight attendants; and dispatch we decided to divert; as a precaution; to the closest airport in time and suitable for landing. Unable to determine the source of the odor. Contract maintenance inspected the aircraft and in coordination with company operations decided to ferry it to a company maintenance base for further inspection.

Title: An A320 Captain described experiencing an odor of burning plastic in-flight. After discussion with Dispatch they diverted to the nearest suitable airport.
