Narrative:

Departing out of teb on runway 24 were given the teb 5. Out of 1000 ft I engaged the autopilot and saw the altitudes cap annunciation appear and v-bars coming down to level off. I reached to turn the heading bug to heading 280 when I looked back up the autopilot had not captured the altitude. My sic and I immediately noticed the deviation and returned to 1500 ft. Departure control did not say anything. Just had us continue to climb on the departure. The departure had been thoroughly briefed before engine start as well as on the taxi out. I will always be hand flying the departures out of teb.
