Narrative:
Immediately after takeoff; we had a master warning alert with ptrim main inoperative and ptrim backup inoperative messages displayed on the EICAS. We applied the appropriate checklist from the aircraft manual. We declared an emergency and returned to land. Landing was uneventful. There have been numerous pitch trim problems with the emb aircraft over a period of several years. Care should be taken to ensure that the pitch trim system is functional and capable of providing the necessary level of safety.
