Narrative:

Clearance 10000 to 8000 direct to a new fix and assigned a new arrival plus a new runway. There was a lot of confusion among all the rj pilots; and some with myself as well. The controller sounded as if he was mad which did not help. It seems better planning could be done by ATC before all the last minute; non-standard clearances; are given. All the crews were heads down reprogramming their FMC's and nobody was clearing.
