Narrative:
After takeoff from psp on cathedral 9 departure; tower cleared us direct psp; and we thought 'flight planned route.' we turned direct psp. As we crossed psp above the published MCA for V370; we proceeded outbound on V370 on the 053 radial. Departure control asked us why we were not proceeding to emrud on the cathedral 9. Perhaps we misunderstood our clearance; but as our altitude above the MCA; we proceeded outbound V370 in accordance with what we understood to be our clearance.

Title: Air carrier flight crew reported not flying via EMRUD during the CATH9 departure from PSP. This error was pointed out by Departure Control.
Narrative: After takeoff from PSP on Cathedral 9 departure; Tower cleared us direct PSP; and we thought 'Flight Planned Route.' We turned direct PSP. As we crossed PSP above the published MCA for V370; we proceeded outbound on V370 on the 053 radial. Departure Control asked us why we were not proceeding to EMRUD on the Cathedral 9.
