Narrative:
Enroute we began experiencing random; spurious; electrical problems of equipment that would shutdown and restart; such as wx radar; cockpit lighting; DME; autot throttles; and other. Suspecting an electrical fault or bus fault problem but of unknown source and no defined procedure to isolate the problem(s); I elected to start the APU to provide backup power; declare an emergency; and land. During the approach phase the left gen failed and shortly after most problems disappeared. Captain's FMC also failed. First officer flew a CAT I ILS as captain's instruments were suspect. A safe landing and taxi-back to parking followed and maintenance debriefed.
