Narrative:
After takeoff on gear retraction had total electrical failure. Had portable garmin 696 GPS; unable to restore electrical after reading poh. Via cell phone called FBO at at my destination and asked them to advise tower that I was inbound; no radio; no lights; ETA xa:30 hours. Hand cranked gear down; landed approximately xa:45-XB00 hours. I had a hand held radio on board although the batteries were dead. After replacing batteries called ground and advised them what happened. ATC (tower) stated it was an emergency and a 'non-event.' I found out after landing that the FBO was unable to contact the tower. I need to check and/or charge weekly hand held radios. Electrical issue is one of those things that just happen. After takeoff I flew to my destination because I wanted as much ground light as possible and level terrain to make my approach for landing.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: An A36 lost total electrical power after takeoff at night. The pilot continued his flight to the planned destination because terrain conditions and lighting were better than the airport from which he departed.
