Narrative:

We were on an extended downwind vector for final approach into san at 6000 ft; 30 - 40NM east of the airport on an easterly heading. We noticed terrain shaded yellow on our nd at our 10-11 o'clock position. The radar altitude went from 2500 ft down to 1500 ft with a 'pull up; terrain' announced GPWS/egpws. We started an immediate climb to 7000 ft and notified ATC. We were IMC the entire time and at night. We were given vectors back toward the airport. Rest of flight was uneventful.
