Narrative:
Just before pushback; we were given a departure routing different from the one on our flight plan. I entered the departure route that I heard and reviewed it with my copilot. We were in agreement that the departure agreed with that in the FMS. On departure; we realized the routing I had heard and the routing ATC had meant were different. By the time we corrected our error; we had deviated approx. 3-5 miles. Because of my limited ability to hear vowels in french; I chose a similar sounding (to me) departure. Also; we only checked the departure change and did not see the route discontinuity down the road. It was in flight; as we expanded the nav display range; that we saw the route discontinuity and hence was what prompted our search for our error.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: Airbus flight crew failed to note the change in their departure routing clearance and suffered a track error after takeoff. Cite difficulty in understanding vowel distinctions when pronounced by the French Clearance Delivery personnel.
